|The accompanying pages are intended to convey a tableau of anti-theism from Kapila to Leconte dc Lisle. The anti-theistic tendencies of England and America have been treated by other writers; in the present volume, therefore, that branch of the subject is not discussed. To avoid misconception, it may be added that no attempt has been made to prove anything. It is the intention of the writer, not indeed to insist on this or on that, but rather, in displaying the views philosopher and of sage, to suggest that if the laws which govern the universe are invariable, it would seem to follow that everything which happens happens because it must, in which case there can be little that is of much consequence and nothing whatever that is worthy of dislike, of fear even, or of hope. In brief, it was the writer's endeavor to divest his reader of one or two idle preoccupations, and to leave him serener in spirit, and of better cheer than before|--Book.
